That's bad news for Denzelle White, a 10-year-old from Edgewood who
likes to play outdoors in the summer, but suffers from asthma.

Joe DeLizia, supervisor of the Harford County Health Department's air
and waste division, said the county does what it can to prevent ozone,
which at high levels can make outdoor exertion difficult or even
dangerous for those with respiratory problems. But Harford County jumped from 50th to 25th in the
national rankings.

The American Lung Association ranked Anne Arundel County as the 18th
worst county nationwide for ozone this year, a slight improvement over
last year's 15th.

To minimize ozone on hot, sunny days, she recommended that people use
public transit or avoid driving, refuel their cars after dark, avoid
painting outdoors and postpone using gas-powered lawn mowers .

Maryland health and environmental officials say the ozone numbers are
the result of dirty air that migrates from the Midwest each summer,
mixes with local pollutants and hits a barrier formed by winds off the
Chesapeake Bay.

four out of the five dirtiest metro areas.JUST RELEASED.

The Lung Association report is based on data collected from air
quality monitoring stations nationwide.

Baltimore and its nearby suburbs also have pollution problems, but
they may not record higher ozone levels because some of their dirty
air is blown away before it's sufficiently cooked, said Jeff Stehr,
an atmospheric scientist at the University of Maryland.

There's only so much we can do, he said.

Ozone can damage the lungs and airways, causing inflammation and
exacerbating the symptoms of asthma, bronchitis and emphysema.

An EPA spokesman said the 1997 standards were the subject of a federal
suit by the petroleum and trucking industries, which prevented the
agency from enforcing them.

After Anne Arundel made last year's worst list, the county set up a
task force to deal with the problem. Harford County might have jumped
in the rankings because of its population growth, they say. It also
can make healthy people cough, wheeze and feel tightness in the chest.

Ozone is a gas formed when sunlight and warm summer temperatures heat
the hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide in emissions from power plants,
internal combustion engines and other sources.
The elderly, infants and young children are the most susceptible. -- Mrs. An ozone alert means her
